After last year’s themes EARTHQUAKE (2021), CROWD (2022) and IDEAL CITY (2023), this year’s theme is GAMES in the CITY!
The subject was described in more detail by art critic and exhibition selector Branka Hlevnjak:
GAMES IN THE CITY (2024)
When we say GAME, we immediately think of the rules. Because there is no game that has no rules; and even simple children’s games, such as hide-and-seek or hunting, not to mention the piquancy, which has complex rules.
But when we think of the CITY and its games, suddenly the abyss of games without rules opens up; interpersonal relations at work, neighborly games, games with bureaucracy, games with the judiciary, business and trade games, media sensationalist games, games of chance, political games and petty scheming games,
love games and adultery.Games without borders suddenly become the source of everything that does not respect the rules. Imagination does not stop in thinking and thinking about what kind of games are imposed and subverted, not only as a social standard but also as a system of complex and intricate behavior, which only cartoonists know how to untangle, or more precisely reveal as an OFFENSE. Because playing correctly means not making mistakes about the rules.
Well, it’s up to the cartoonists to take, instead of a mouthpiece, a pen and paints (and a computer? – YES!) in their hands and show us all those serious violations that occur in the city, and maybe even in the countryside (finally, a long time ago we know that the city is a global village).
The sentences should be suspended. Anyone who recognizes himself must smile, even if it’s a sardonic smile.
Everyone is welcome to send their cartoon(s) on this topic in the form described in the contest proposals!
Applications for the competition are open from October 7 to November 12, 2024, and EVERYONE interested can apply – regardless of experience, age, gender, religion, nationality or any other (more or less important) characteristic of the author. Authors can submit 1-3 “silent” cartoons (without words!), following the competition proposals and responding in their own unique and creative way to the given topic. At the end of the application, the expert jury will select the best among the submitted cartoons, and then the public will be able to vote and choose the cartoons that will be awarded. Regardless of the voting results, all participants will receive a certificate of participation, and their selected cartoons will be published in the 3rd ZeGeBOOM! catalog of cartoons. The winners of the competition will additionally earn valuable prizes! Online voting will be available worldwide and open from November 21 to December 3, 2024. The best cartoons will be exhibited from December 10 to December 31, 2024 in the Small Gallery of the Trešnjevka Cultural Center, and all other submitted cartoons will be available online – to allow everyone to enjoy the art of cartoon!
